Miami Seaquarium Faces Criticism Over Animal Welfare and Defiance of Veterinarian

Miami Seaquarium, a popular marine park in Virginia Key, has come under fire after a recent federal inspection revealed multiple instances of animal endangerment and a concerning disregard for the attending veterinarian’s authority. The inspection, conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, highlighted issues such as unfilled veterinarian positions, mishandling of a biting dolphin, a dolphin ingesting plastic and concrete, lack of shade for a manatee, and rib injuries to a dolphin held incompatibly with others.

One of the most troubling findings was the new chief trainer’s alleged superiority complex, as he declared himself above the attending veterinarian and instructed employees to ignore her instructions. According to the inspection report, a conflict arose between the trainer and the veterinarian, resulting in a stressful environment for the staff and animals. The trainer displayed a Chain of Command chart in his office, positioning himself at the top and excluding the attending veterinarian. This power dynamic undermined the veterinarian’s authority and raised concerns among employees who feared retaliation if they reported the situation.

The inspectors emphasized the importance of having the attending veterinarian in charge of the animals’ veterinary care, warning that failure to do so could lead to unnecessary stress, discomfort, and suffering for the animals. Miami Seaquarium’s owner, The Dolphin Company, which took over the park’s lease from Miami-Dade County, had agreed not to exhibit Lolita, a beloved orca who recently passed away, due to safety concerns with her aging tank. However, the park did not respond to inquiries about whether the required corrections have been made in response to the USDA’s findings.

Another issue highlighted in the inspection report was the inadequate training of employees. The firing of one veterinarian and subsequent staff resignations posed challenges in ensuring proper animal care. The USDA report underscored the need for adequately trained personnel to safeguard the well-being of the marine creatures.

Miami Seaquarium’s controversial history and recent inspection findings have sparked debate about the ethics and practices of marine parks. Critics argue that these establishments often prioritize profit over animal welfare, resulting in confined and stressed animals that suffer physically and psychologically. Advocates for stricter regulations and enhanced oversight of marine parks call for comprehensive reforms to protect the well-being of marine life and prevent instances of mistreatment and noncompliance.

The USDA inspection report sheds light on the issues plaguing Miami Seaquarium and urges the park’s management to address the deficiencies promptly. This case serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by captive marine animals and the need for responsible stewardship to ensure their welfare. As public awareness grows, the pressure on marine parks to prioritize animal welfare and adhere to strict guidelines continues to increase.
