Fatal Pedestrian Crash Shuts Down Traffic on Westbound I-84 in Meridian
Meridian, Idaho – Tragedy struck on Wednesday evening when a fatal pedestrian crash disrupted traffic on Westbound I-84, resulting in a blockage that lasted almost 5 hours. The incident occurred near exit 44, leaving emergency responders with the daunting task of aiding those involved and clearing the scene.
In their report, the Idaho State Police (ISP) revealed that the accident took place at approximately 8 PM. A woman from Marsing was behind the wheel of a 2015 Toyota Highlander when an unknown pedestrian unexpectedly crossed the lanes, leading to a devastating collision. Sadly, the pedestrian lost their life at the scene, and authorities are still working to identify the deceased with the assistance of the Ada County coroner.
This recent fatality is just one among several similar incidents that the ISP has dealt with over the past month. On October 24th alone, two separate fatal accidents occurred, each with its own tragic circumstances. At 3:30 PM, a driver who neglected to wear a seatbelt was ejected from a flatbed trailer carrying lumber, resulting in their untimely demise. The off-ramp was closed for 12 hours to allow for the necessary investigations. Earlier that day, at 2:50 PM near Harrison, a female driver also suffered a fatal accident after being ejected from her 2001 Toyota 4Runner, once again due to not wearing a seatbelt.
Alarming statistics reveal that during the 100 Deadliest Days on Idaho roads, which span from Memorial Day to Labor Day, there were a shocking 92 fatalities. Moreover, before this period, at least 37 fatal crashes were reported. In the month of October alone, there have been at least 15 fatal crashes responded to by the Idaho State Police, and since Labor Day in September, a total of 11 accidents resulting in fatalities.
In light of these distressing occurrences, it is crucial to emphasize the importance of seatbelt usage. The simple act of buckling up can make all the difference between a mere accident and an irreparable tragedy. Drivers must prioritize their safety and that of other road users by wearing their seatbelts at all times.
The ISP continues its unwavering commitment to investigating these incidents and promoting road safety. With the aim of preventing further tragedies, they urge drivers to remain vigilant, follow traffic regulations, and prioritize the use of seatbelts. By working together, we can help make our roads safer for everyone.
