Michigan AG Drops Charges Against Republican Accused of Falsifying Election Results as Cooperation Deal Reached
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office has reached a cooperation deal with one of the Republicans who falsely claimed that former President Donald Trump won the state’s 2020 presidential election. The agreement between Nessel’s office and James Renner was announced during a court hearing, where the judge granted a motion to drop the eight felony charges against Renner.
In a separate development, Timothy King, another Trump elector, was granted a request for a mental evaluation due to his alleged delusional and illogical thinking. King’s lawyer explained that it had been challenging to make him focus on the serious charges he is facing.
Under the agreement with the Attorney General’s office, Renner has committed to cooperating fully with law enforcement by providing information about the Michigan false slate of electors. This development comes on the same day that Sidney Powell, a lawyer known for attempting to overturn the 2020 election results, pleaded guilty to reduced charges in Georgia as part of a deal with prosecutors there.
Renner, aged 76, may serve as a witness in future legal proceedings as state prosecutors continue to pursue charges against the 15 remaining Republicans who signed the false certificate on December 14, 2020. Renner and another Republican were filling in for the original Trump electors who were unable to attend the gathering.
It is important to note that President Joe Biden won Michigan with a margin of 154,000 votes or 3 percentage points, securing the state’s 16 electoral votes. However, Trump and his supporters have persisted in spreading baseless claims of election fraud.
