Fall Allergy Season Begins in Houston as Ragweed and Mold Bloom

As the summer heat starts to fade, Houston residents are bracing themselves for the onset of fall allergies. While the dry summer provided a brief relief for those with environmental allergies, the recent increase in rain has triggered the blooming of ragweed and mold in the area.

Dr. David Corry, a professor at Baylor College of Medicine specializing in immunology, allergy, and rheumatology, explains, This summer was good news for people who are sensitive to mold and pollen as there were little of those allergens in the air, but now that we’re seeing more rain coming in after this drought, we’re experiencing a big ragweed and mold bloom in Houston.

Differentiating between fall allergies and seasonal viruses can be challenging, as they often present similar symptoms. Sneezing, a runny nose, and itchy, watery eyes are common allergy symptoms. On the other hand, viruses like the flu or a cold may cause a sore throat and general malaise.

Although the body may react strongly to sudden exposure to a large amount of pollen or mold, resulting in aches and pains, these symptoms are temporary. To determine the cause of symptoms, testing for the flu and cold can be helpful.

Various fall activities, such as hayrides at pumpkin patches, can exacerbate allergies. The bales used in hayrides are often made from grasses that many people are allergic to. It is also important to be vigilant for signs of mold, such as black streaks or foul, damp odors while participating in these outdoor activities.

Mold spores can take hold in your upper airway, causing allergy symptoms, and an infection can cause something more severe like sinusitis. If mold spores get in your lower airway, it is possible to develop asthma, warns Dr. Corry. He further advises utilizing nasal allergy sprays and over-the-counter antihistamines twice a day if symptoms persist.

To alleviate allergy symptoms, using a nasal saline sinus rinse with tools like a neti pot, squeeze bottle, or electronic machine can also be beneficial. Seeking additional help from an allergist is recommended for those struggling with persistent symptoms. Allergy shots, nasal obstructions, nasal polyps, and sleep apnea can be evaluated or treated by an allergist.

As fall allergies become more prevalent in Houston, it is crucial to stay informed and take necessary precautions. While symptoms may be bothersome, managing allergies can significantly improve one’s quality of life during this season. By following the advice of experts, individuals can better navigate the challenges presented by ragweed and mold.
