The Biden administration has stopped taking mobile app appointments for asylum-seekers at a Texas border crossing connecting to the notoriously dangerous city of Nuevo Laredo, in Mexico, after humanitarian groups warned U.S. authorities that migrants were being targeted for extortion. Several asylum-seekers reported that Mexican officials in Nuevo Laredo had threatened to hold them and make them miss their scheduled asylum appointments unless they paid them. The situation in Nuevo Laredo, plagued by cartel fighting and other problems, called into question the administration’s argument that Mexico is a safe place. Asylum-seekers have been blocked at the border since the pandemic outbreak but the administration opened some new avenues for immigration. However, the fate of many people is left to the CBP One app used for scheduling an appointment at a port of entry.
