Federal Funding Brings Safe Water to 97 Virginia Households in Hurley Community

Residents of the Hurley community in Virginia can finally bid farewell to the days of relying on private wells or purchasing bottled water, thanks to a federal funding injection of $700,000. Today, U.S. Senators Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine, both Democrats representing Virginia, announced the funding for the Hurley Waterline Extension Project. The grant, made possible by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), will be channeled to the Buchanan County Board of Supervisors. Its purpose? To improve water access to 97 households in this area.

For years, the Hurley community has faced challenges in securing reliable and safe water sources. Many residents were left with no choice but to rely on private wells, haul their own water, or purchase bottled water to meet their household needs. However, with the completion of this project, that will no longer be the case. The Hurley Waterline Extension Project aims to provide a sustainable solution, bringing reliable and safe water to these households.

The $700,000 funding will mark the final phase of a comprehensive project that was initiated back in 2008. Its objective was to ensure that approximately 1,450 households in the Hurley community have access to safe and clean water. The total funding for the project amounts to an impressive $6,570,358. In addition to the ARC funds, contributions from other federal sources will amount to $3,877,220, state sources will provide $1,829,973, and local services will chip in $163,165. This collaborative effort demonstrates a commitment to improving living conditions and public health for the residents of Hurley.

It’s worth noting that Senators Warner and Kaine have been long-standing advocates for enhancing clean water access throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. In fact, just last week, the senators announced over $4 million in federal funding as part of the bipartisan infrastructure law. This funding will support various local initiatives aimed at protecting water quality and promoting public health for all Virginia residents. Their ongoing dedication to addressing water-related challenges in the region is commendable and demonstrates their commitment to the well-being of their constituents.

The successful completion of the Hurley Waterline Extension Project marks a transformative milestone for the Hurley community. Finally, the residents will be able to enjoy the benefits of safe, clean water in their households. The project serves as a reminder that collaboration between federal, state, and local entities can bring about substantial change and improve living conditions for those in need.

With the support and commitment demonstrated by Senators Warner and Kaine, it is clear that efforts to improve clean water access across the Commonwealth of Virginia are prioritized on both the local and national levels. This project sets an example for other communities facing similar water challenges, with the hope that they too can benefit from the resources and funding required to ensure a sustainable and healthy future for all.
