One Dead, Dozens Injured as School Bus Overturns on I-84 near New York City
At least one person has tragically lost their life and dozens more have been injured after a school bus carrying students rolled over on Interstate 84 in Orange County, New York. The incident occurred approximately 75 miles north of New York City. Details of the severity of the injuries have not yet been provided.
According to the Wawayanda Fire Company, around 45 people sustained injuries in the accident. The fire company did not disclose further information regarding the extent of the injuries. New York State Police stated in a news release that there were multiple serious injuries.
The bus was transporting students from Farmingdale High School in Long Island who were en route to a music event for band camp, confirmed a spokesperson from the high school. The school further mentioned that the destination was Greeley, Pennsylvania.
We were informed that there had been an accident with Bus 1 en route to Greeley, PA for band camp, said Farmingdale High School spokesperson Jake Mendlinger. Police and emergency responders are on the scene, as well as district administration. We will provide another update when more information becomes available.
Aerial images captured by CNN affiliates show the passenger bus located in the woods, positioned in the median between the eastbound and westbound lanes. Emergency officials and medical responders are present at the crash site, with a medical helicopter also stationed nearby on the highway.
Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus expressed his condolences and support, stating, Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of the bus crash and their families. I would also like to thank all of the first responders for their immediate response, service, and dedication.
As a result of the accident, Interstate 84 is closed at exit 15A, with detours in place. State police have advised that the westbound section of Interstate 84 is expected to remain closed for several hours.
