Japanese WWII Soldier’s 30-Year Guerrilla War: From Fanaticism to Heroism
In a fascinating tale of perseverance and loyalty, Lieutenant Hiroo Onoda, an intelligence officer in the Imperial Army, fought an extraordinary guerrilla war for three decades after World War II officially ended. Born on March 19, 1922, Onoda joined the army at the age of 20 in 1942, during the height of the war. Trained in guerrilla techniques and military intelligence, he was later stationed on the Philippine island of Lubang. When American troops landed in February 1945, most Japanese soldiers surrendered, but Onoda and a handful of others remained behind, defying the notion of surrender.
Their plan was to conduct guerrilla warfare, inflicting damage on their perceived enemies and surviving off the land. Over the course of their clandestine mission, they killed numerous villagers and carried out acts of sabotage. Despite several attempts by patrols to locate them, the soldiers managed to elude capture, hiding in bamboo huts and meticulously mending their uniforms.
For Onoda and his comrades, the war was not over; they rejected any news suggesting Japan’s surrender as mere propaganda. They believed Japan would never surrender to the United States. It wasn’t until 1974, when a young student named Norio Suzuki discovered Onoda on the island, that the soldier’s perception began to shift. Suzuki, under orders from Major Yoshimi Taniguchi, successfully convinced Onoda to surrender after a long and arduous persuasion.
Onoda returned to Japan as a hero, hailed for his unwavering commitment to duty. However, he found his homeland unrecognizable, transformed into a materialistic and superficial society. Disillusioned by these changes, Onoda sought to preserve the values of perseverance and loyalty that seemed to be fading away.
After spending some time in Brazil and getting married, Onoda returned to Japan and established a survival school for young people, aiming to impart his surviving skills and values. In 1974, he published his biography, titled No Surrender: My 30 Year War, recounting his remarkable experience during the war.
Hiroo Onoda lived the remainder of his life in Japan, peacefully spreading his message until his death in 2014 at the age of 91. His story serves as a reminder of the lengths to which individuals can go in service of their beliefs, and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
