Mexico’s Aviation Safety Rating Upgraded, Opening New Routes to the US

After more than two years of dedicated collaboration between the aviation authorities of Mexico and the United States, Mexico’s aviation safety rating has now been elevated to the highest level by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This upgraded status marks a significant milestone for Mexico, as it allows the country to expand its service and routes to the United States, while also enabling US airlines to resume marketing and selling tickets for flights operated by Mexican carriers.

The FAA’s decision to return Mexico to Category 1 status comes as a result of a close partnership and the exchange of expertise and resources. Through technical assistance agreements, the FAA provided support to Mexico’s Agencia Federal de Aviacion Civil (AFAC) in addressing the safety issues that had led to the downgrade. Over the past two years, the FAA dispatched a team of aviation safety experts on multiple occasions to aid in this vital work.

In May 2021, the FAA downgraded Mexico’s International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA) rating to Category 2 after identifying deficiencies in meeting the safety standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). However, with the recent upgrade, Mexico has successfully demonstrated its commitment to complying with ICAO’s safety standards, which are recognized globally.

Under the IASA program, the FAA evaluates the civil aviation authorities of countries whose airlines seek to operate in the United States, currently conduct operations to the US, or engage in code-sharing arrangements with US carriers. These assessments are conducted to verify compliance with minimum ICAO safety standards rather than FAA regulations.

To attain and maintain a Category 1 rating, a country must adhere to ICAO’s safety standards, which are established by the international aviation technical agency. It is noteworthy that ICAO serves as the United Nations’ specialized agency responsible for developing and promoting global standards and recommended practices in aircraft operations and maintenance.

The upgraded aviation safety rating for Mexico is not only a testament to the hard work and determination of both countries’ aviation authorities but also paves the way for enhanced travel options and connectivity between the neighboring nations. The resumption of marketing and selling tickets by US airlines for flights operated by Mexican carriers will provide travelers with more choices and convenience when planning their journeys.

This development brings positive implications for the aviation industry, tourism, business, and cultural exchange. It is expected to benefit both Mexico and the United States by boosting economic growth, facilitating cooperation, and strengthening bilateral relations. The upgraded rating offers a renewed sense of confidence for travelers in terms of safety and will likely incentivize more people to consider Mexico as a destination or transit point for their travels.

Overall, the FAA’s decision to upgrade Mexico’s aviation safety rating to Category 1 represents a significant milestone for the Mexican aviation industry, opening new doors and opportunities. It also underscores Mexico’s commitment to ensuring the highest standards of aviation safety, aligning with global norms and regulations. As Mexico expands its air services and strengthens its ties with the US, travelers can now look forward to more accessible and seamless travel options between the two nations.
