Zambia and DRC Collaborate to Address Border Challenges

Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are forging a stronger collaboration to address border challenges and enhance security between the two countries. The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, Norman Chipakupaku, highlighted the historical ties between Zambia and the DRC while acknowledging the existence of challenges such as border violations by nationals from both countries.

During the 12th Session of the Zambia/DRC Joint Permanent Commission (JPC) meeting on Defence and Security held in Lubumbashi, Mr. Chipakupaku emphasized the need for collaboration to urgently address security concerns exacerbated by the vastness and porous nature of the border. Addressing issues such as smuggling, illegal migration, and drug and human trafficking are crucial to the attainment of economic transformation for both nations.

Zambia’s assumption of the Chairmanship of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation further underscores their commitment to enhancing peace and stability in the region. The country is determined to support SADC’s efforts to end conflicts affecting the DRC and other countries in the region. Zambia is also dedicated to promoting democracy by supporting free and fair elections.

Delegates from both Zambia and the DRC are urged to work together to find sustainable solutions to security threats faced by both nations. The Zambian government reaffirms its alignment with the work of the commission and pledges full support for interventions implemented by both countries. Mr. Chipakupaku appreciated the DRC government’s invitation to attend the commission’s session, recognizing the commitments faced by Zambia, including preparations for the upcoming general elections.

Stanyslas Bakatumwina, the DRC Advisor to the Interior Minister, expressed his country’s appreciation for the good relations between Zambia and the DRC. He affirmed the commitment of Presidents Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia and Felix Tshisekedi of the DRC to further strengthen bilateral relations through mutual meetings and dialogue.

The four-day Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security meeting aims to review progress made and facilitate increased interaction between officials from both countries. Attended by Defence and Security Chiefs from national and regional levels, the meeting seeks to enhance bilateral relations between Zambia and the DRC.

This collaborative effort between Zambia and the DRC demonstrates a commitment to addressing common challenges and seeking mutually beneficial solutions. By focusing on security and stability, both nations aim to create an environment conducive to economic growth and development. Through continued collaboration and dialogue, the longstanding relations between these sister countries can be further strengthened, fostering regional peace and prosperity.
