An Australian man, Scott Phillip White, was sent to prison for nine years for the manslaughter of an American mathematician, Scott Johnson, in Sydney in 1988. Johnson’s brother, Steve, had been fighting for 35 years to get police to launch a criminal investigation into his younger brother’s death, which had initially been ruled a suicide. White had initially been sentenced to over 12 years in prison for murder but overturned the conviction on appeal and pleaded guilty to manslaughter. He was forced into the plea deal after confessing to striking Johnson while on a prison call. The maximum sentence for manslaughter is 25 years. White will be eligible for parole release in 2026. Johnson’s brother, who put up a $667,000 reward for information about his brother’s death, considers the sentence a form of justice.
