Mississippi Makes History with Election of First Openly Gay State Legislator
In a historic win, Mississippi has elected its first openly gay state legislator. Fabian Nelson, a 38-year-old realtor from Byram, emerged victorious in the Democratic primary election runoff on Tuesday, securing his place in the state’s House of Representatives. The race, which took place in the south Jackson metro area, required a runoff after neither Nelson nor his opponent, Roshunda Harris-Allen, received a majority vote in the initial primary.
Nelson’s milestone achievement comes at a time when Republican-controlled legislatures across the country have been enacting a wave of restrictions targeting the rights of transgender individuals. LGBTQ+ advocates have been grappling with a record number of discriminatory measures throughout 2023. Mississippi itself implemented a ban earlier this year, prohibiting gender-affirming hormones or surgery for individuals under 18.
Notably, the Republicans did not field a candidate for the general election, making Nelson the uncontested representative for the district. He is set to be sworn in before the start of the next legislative session in January. His journey to the state legislature began as a child, when he visited the Capitol on a school field trip and expressed his aspirations to one day sit on the House floor.
Reflecting on his historic win, Nelson expressed shock and gratitude, stating that he still felt like he was in a dream. He had garnered the endorsement of the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ rights organization. In June, the organization declared a state of emergency for LGBTQ+ people in the United States due to the passage of discriminatory bills.
Rob Hill, the state director of the Mississippi chapter of the Human Rights Campaign, hailed Nelson’s victory as a rejection of animus and a powerful message against the attacks faced by the LGBTQ+ community. Hill emphasized that many young individuals across the state, who may have felt rejected or targeted by their leaders, would no longer feel alone.
Nelson, who connected with voters by emphasizing his deep local ties, has vowed to focus on increasing healthcare access for low-income individuals by advocating for Medicaid expansion. Additionally, he intends to be a strong voice against policies that harm marginalized communities, committed to ensuring that discriminatory practices cease in Mississippi.
Annise Parker, president of the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, commended the state’s historic achievement, noting that Mississippi was only one of two states that had not elected an openly LGBTQ+ lawmaker until now. Parker expressed pride in the progress made and confidence in Nelson’s ability to represent and serve the constituency effectively.
While Nelson’s victory marks a significant milestone, the state of Mississippi continues to face political developments. In a closely contested primary runoff in north Mississippi, Republican Rep. Nick Bain, one of the authors of the ban on gender-affirming care for minors, found himself trailing his fellow Republican Brad Mattox. In south Mississippi, Felix Gines, a Democrat who had initially been elected as a Biloxi City Council member, lost a Republican runoff to Zachary Grady, a former police officer.
However, amidst these developments, Rodney Hall, a former aide to Republican Congressman Trent Kelly and a former Army veteran, secured the Republican primary in a northeast Mississippi district and is set to become the state legislature’s first Black Republican since the 1890s.
Mississippi’s recent elections have delivered a mix of historic firsts and changing political landscapes.
