Smoke from Canadian wildfires has led to Code Red air quality alerts in parts of the US and Canada for a third day and is expected to persist into the weekend. Over 400 wildfires were burning in Canada on Thursday, with a third of them in Quebec. Smoke from the fires has extended as far south as North Carolina and is expected to reach northern Europe. Under half of people in Washington DC wore face masks and the local government cancelled outdoor activities at public schools and local senior centres. The poor air quality forced the National Zoo in Washington DC to close to protect its animals and students in New York City will attend classes remotely on Friday.
