Ukrainian Forces Make Advances in Southern Region, Nearing Zaporizhzhia
Ukrainian forces have reportedly achieved a breakthrough in the southern region of Zaporizhzhia, inching closer to their strategic target, according to a recent assessment by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). This development marks a significant tactical gain for Kyiv, as its fighters managed to push through some of the toughest defensive positions set up by Russian forces.
Over the past three months, Ukraine has steadily regained small portions of territory from entrenched Russian troops, with a particular focus on the eastern and southern fronts. The counteroffensive has also witnessed an increase in strikes on targets in the occupied Crimea region.
A Ukrainian commander revealed to Reuters that they have successfully breached the most challenging defenses in the south and are now poised to advance towards the port city of Berdiansk, ultimately reaching the Sea of Azov. This progress indicates a positive turning point in Ukraine’s efforts to regain control of its territory.
Russia, in anticipation of Ukraine’s counteroffensive, had heavily mined the region and prepared multiple layers of defensive lines, effectively slowing down Kyiv’s advancements. The ISW report states that this grinding counteroffensive has brought Ukrainian forces within striking distance of the next series of prepared Russian defensive positions. While these defenses may be weaker than those already overcome, they still present a significant challenge for the Ukrainian forces.
Moscow has deployed substantial resources to fortify the region, placing dense layers of minefields and fortifications that Ukraine is slowly pushing through. Despite the next phase of defenses potentially mirroring the previous ones, including dragon’s teeth fortifications, anti-tank ditches, and mined territories, it remains uncertain how heavily defended they will be compared to the previous lines.
In the Zaporizhzhia area, the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces reported that Russia had shelled more than 20 settlements within 24 hours, including the town of Robotyne. However, Kyiv announced last week that it had gained control over Robotyne. Ukrainian forces continue their operations, moving towards the Russian-controlled city of Melitopol, while implementing counterbattery resistance measures, as mentioned in a statement by the General Staff.
On the other hand, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that its units successfully repelled three attacks from a Ukrainian air assault brigade near Robotyne.
The situation in southern Ukraine remains fluid, with both sides engaged in a tense standoff. As Ukrainian forces make headway, it is clear that the landscape of the conflict is shifting. The progress towards Zaporizhzhia marks a significant development for Kyiv, while Russian defenses continue to pose an obstacle.
