Storied Property with Miraculous Past Sold to Coptic Church, Preserving Hudson River Views

In a remarkable turn of events, a historic property with a miraculous past has been sold to the Bishops of the Coptic Church of New York and New England, ensuring the preservation of its stunning Hudson River views. The 522-acre land parcel, located in West Park off Route 9W, was purchased for $9.3 million from the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart.

This storied property holds special significance due to its connection to Mother Frances Cabrini, who was laid to rest here in accordance with her wishes when she passed away in 1919. Mother Cabrini, the first naturalized U.S. citizen-saint, was canonized by the Catholic Church in 1946. The sale of this property is considered to have contributed to a church-certified miracle associated with Mother Cabrini.

The property’s history dates back to 1890 when Cabrini established the first orphan asylum on the land, purchasing it from the Order of the Jesuits at a low price due to concerns about the availability of well water. However, Cabrini’s order discovered a spring on the property that continues to serve to this day.

Over the years, Cabrini went on to establish numerous schools, orphanages, and hospitals across the country, most of which included shrines. Her legacy also includes providing support to immigrant families, advocating for education, and assisting individuals in finding employment to support themselves.

The Sacred Heart Center for New Americans at Cabrini-on-Hudson in West Park has played a crucial role in supporting immigrant families from Latin America, the Caribbean, and other regions. Offering programs focused on community partnerships, advocacy, empowerment, and language proficiency, the center has been a valuable resource for immigrants residing in Ulster, Orange, and Dutchess counties.

While the specific plans of the Coptic Church for the recently acquired property have not been disclosed yet, there are assurances that the land will be preserved in all its natural beauty. Broker Paul Adler, representing both the buyer and the seller, describes the transaction as a match made in heaven.

It is important to note that the property is exempt from property taxes, as both the buyer and the seller organizations qualify for this exemption.

This sale marks a significant chapter in the storied history of this property. As the Coptic Church takes ownership, one can only hope that it will continue to honor the legacy of Mother Cabrini and preserve the breathtaking Hudson River views for future generations to enjoy.
