LSU’s Star Defensive Tackle Maason Smith Faces Suspension in Opener Against Florida State

LSU Tigers’ star defensive tackle Maason Smith will have to wait a little longer for his much-anticipated return to the field as he faces a suspension that will sideline him for the team’s season opener against Florida State. This setback comes as a disappointment, particularly considering Smith’s recovery from a major knee injury sustained last season.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the NCAA suspended Smith due to his involvement in an autograph signing prior to a rule change in July 2021 that allowed college players to profit from their name, image, and likeness (NIL). While the suspension has not been officially announced by the NCAA or LSU, Smith reportedly cooperated with the NCAA’s investigation.

Smith’s absence in the opener against Florida State is a blow to the Tigers’ defensive line, especially since he was injured in last year’s season opener against the same team. The talented five-star recruit tore his left anterior cruciate ligament during a celebration after a teammate’s tackle, sidelining him for the majority of the previous season.

During his freshman year in 2021, Smith showcased his potential, recording four sacks and five tackles for losses in just nine games. As a result, he earned preseason All-Southeastern Conference honors heading into this season. However, fans will have to wait until the team’s home opener against Grambling on September 9th to witness his return to the field.

Fortunately for the Tigers, their interior defensive line rotation possesses depth and talent. Juniors Mekhi Wingo and Jacobian Guillory, along with senior transfer Jordan Jefferson from West Virginia, will step up to fill the void left by Smith’s suspension. Jefferson, who started for the Mountaineers last season, showcased his abilities with three sacks and 9.5 tackles for losses.

LSU’s focus will now shift towards their opener against Florida State, and despite the absence of Maason Smith, the team remains determined to start the season on a positive note. The Tigers are ranked fifth in the nation, and a victory against the eighth-ranked Seminoles would be a significant statement early on.

As the date of the opener approaches, fans eagerly await the game with anticipation and intrigue. The absence of Maason Smith is undoubtedly a setback, but LSU’s depth and talent give them a fighting chance in their quest for success.

Note to readers: This article covers LSU’s star defensive tackle Maason Smith’s suspension for the team’s season opener against Florida State due to his involvement in an autograph signing. Smith’s injury last season, subsequent recovery, and the team’s alternative options on the defensive line are also highlighted. The Tigers’ determination to begin the season strong despite this setback is emphasized.
