Remains of WWII American Soldiers Finally Repatriated for Interment in the US
The remains of two American soldiers who lost their lives during World War II in the Philippines have been identified and are now being repatriated for interment in the United States. This long-awaited development brings closure to the families of these fallen heroes and highlights the ongoing efforts to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
One of the soldiers, Army Pfc. Arthur C. Barrett, hailed from Swanton, Vermont and served in the 31st Infantry Regiment. He will be interred at the prestigious Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia on August 30th. The other soldier, U.S. Army Pfc. Lex L. Lillard, called Tucson, Arizona his home and was a member of the Medical Department of Manila and Subic Bays in the Philippines.
Both men were taken as prisoners of war after the surrender of the Bataan peninsula on April 9, 1942, and subsequently of Corregidor Island on May 6, 1942. Enduring the atrocities of the notorious 65-mile Bataan Death March, they were then held captive at the Cabanatuan POW camp. Tragically, over 2,500 prisoners perished within the confines of this camp during the war.
Historical accounts and records suggest that Barrett and Lillard were laid to rest in a common grave alongside their fellow prisoners at the local Cabanatuan Camp Cemetery. Following the war, the American Graves Registration Service (AGRS) exhumed the remains from the Cabanatuan cemetery and temporarily relocated them to a U.S. military mausoleum near Manila.
To identify the fallen soldiers, a team of scientists from the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System conducted extensive anthropological analysis, reviewed circumstantial evidence, and performed mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis. These meticulous efforts have allowed the families to bring their loved ones home at last.
The repatriation of these soldiers not only pays tribute to their sacrifice but also serves as a reminder of the thousands of U.S. and Filipino service members who endured unimaginable hardships during World War II.
