Sister Lucia dos Santos, who was one of the visionaries of the Fatima apparitions, has had her cause for sainthood advanced by Pope Francis. Born in Portugal in 1907, Lucia was the eldest of the three children who witnessed apparitions of the Virgin Mary from May to October 1917. After the deaths of her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto, Lucia joined the Dorothean Sisters of Villar at the age of 14, eventually becoming a sister of St. Dorothy. Throughout the rest of her life, Lucia is believed to have received several visions and messages from both Mary and Jesus. She died on February 13, 2005, at the age of 97, and her cause for canonization opened in 2008. Pope Francis recognized Lucia’s heroic virtue and declared her venerable on June 22.
