Archaeologists have made a fascinating discovery in the Polish village of Pień, unearthing the 400-year-old skeleton of a so-called vampire child. This grim finding is shedding light on ancient burial practices and beliefs surrounding the fear of the undead.
The child, believed to have been between the ages of five and seven at the time of death, was laid to rest face down with a padlock on their foot. This peculiar burial practice was intended to prevent the child from rising from the dead. The padlock shows people were afraid of this child after its death, explained archaeologist Dariusz Poliński.
What makes this finding particularly intriguing is that it is the first time a child has been discovered buried in this manner. Typically, such practices were reserved for adults. The burial site where the child was found lies outside the confines of the church graveyard, indicating that those buried there were either not wealthy enough for proper interment or were considered abandoned souls.
Interestingly, this same area yielded the discovery of a vampire woman just last year. Though the term was coined long after her burial, she too was buried with a padlock on her toe. However, unlike the recent finding, she had a sickle placed across her neck. Poliński believes that the significance of these findings lies in understanding the traditions and customs surrounding the treatment of individuals who were considered different or excluded from society.
This same burial practice has also been seen in other areas in Eastern Europe and seems to indicate that people in the area generally feared that their loved ones may rise from the dead and haunt them, Poliński added.
In order to gain further insights into this ancient burial practice and the historical context surrounding it, the child’s skeleton will be transported to Nicholas Copernicus University in Torun for further examination and analysis.
