Balloons Released to Mark 25th Anniversary of Quinn Brothers’ Murders

Balloons were released during a solemn gathering on the 25th anniversary of the brutal murder of the three Quinn brothers in Ballymoney. Jason (8), Mark (9), and Richard (10) were tragically killed in a UVF firebomb attack during the Drumcree stand-off on July 12, 1998. Dozens of people gathered on the Carnany estate in Ballymoney, Co Antrim to release the balloons in remembrance of the young victims. Davy Joyce, the father of Jason, was present at the event.

Reflecting on the anniversary, Ulster Unionist Party leader Doug Beattie emphasized the importance of acknowledging the devastating consequences that intolerance and hate can have on individuals and communities. Beattie stated, It’s 25 years since the horrific murder of Jason, Mark, and Richard Quinn. As we begin our twelfth celebrations, it is right to stop and reflect on how intolerance and hate can bring out the worst in some.

The three boys had only recently moved into the house with their mother Chrissie, just six days before the tragic attack took place. Another boy, Lee, was fortunate enough to be staying at his grandmother’s home at the time and was spared from the violence.

The murders of the Quinn brothers were closely linked to the ongoing tensions and violence that ensued following the banning of an Orange Order march from Drumcree along the Garvaghy Road, which passed through a primarily Catholic area. Many saw the murders as a direct result of the heightened tensions during this period.

The tragic deaths of the Quinn brothers had a significant impact on the Drumcree standoff, ultimately leading to the protest being called off that year. The four DUP MPs marked the anniversary of the parade ban with an early day motion in the House of Commons, supported by the Orange Order, expressing regret at the continued denial of the brethren’s right to return home via their traditional route.

In a recent interview on the BBC, Orange Order grand secretary Mervyn Gibson highlighted that the murder of the three boys should not be solely attributed to the Drumcree dispute but rather seen as a reflection of wider societal issues. He stated, It was the fault of society.

SDLP MP Claire Hanna called on the DUP to demonstrate leadership and avoid refighting a dispute that took place a quarter of a century ago.

As we remember the tragic loss of three young lives, it is essential to reflect on the lasting impact of intolerance, violence, and hate on individuals, families, and communities. This solemn gathering, marked by the release of balloons, serves as a poignant reminder of the need for unity, understanding, and reconciliation in Northern Ireland, even 25 years after this devastating event.
