In a groundbreaking convoy, 20 trucks filled with essential humanitarian aid have entered the war-torn and besieged Gaza Strip. The trucks passed through the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, marking a significant development in efforts to provide much-needed support to the people of Gaza, who have been suffering from a severe shortage of supplies. The United Nations (UN) humanitarian chief, Martin Griffiths, expressed confidence that this delivery would initiate a sustainable effort to provide essential supplies to the people of Gaza. However, he also cautioned that this first convoy must not be the last, emphasizing the urgent need for ongoing aid to address the dire situation in the region. The Rafah border crossing, which is not controlled by Israel, was temporarily opened to allow the passage of the trucks carrying aid. The Egyptian Red Crescent, responsible for delivering the aid, coordinated with various UN agencies to provide food and medical supplies to Gazans. Israel agreed to allow the aid to enter from Egypt following a request from its top ally, the United States. The move comes in the midst of continued bombings by Israel since Hamas’ surprise attack on October 7. Israel has also imposed a total siege on Gaza, severely restricting access to essentials such as water, food, electricity, and fuel. Hamas militants, who infiltrated Israel from Gaza, caused significant damage and loss of life. According to Israeli officials, at least 1,400 people, mostly civilians, were killed on the first day of the raid. In the subsequent relentless Israeli bombardments, over 4,100 Palestinians, primarily civilians, have been killed, as reported by Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry. Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission chief, welcomed the passage of aid as an important first step in alleviating the suffering of innocent people caught in the conflict. Efforts to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza have been ongoing, with cargo planes and trucks arriving on the Egyptian side of Rafah for days. However, this marks the first delivery directly to the Gaza Strip. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres visited the Egyptian side of the border crossing to oversee preparations for the aid delivery. He emphasized the significance of these trucks, highlighting that they are a lifeline and can mean the difference between life and death for many people in Gaza. Guterres stressed the need for sustained efforts and for multiple convoys to be authorized to ensure sufficient support reaches the people of Gaza. Guterres also emphasized the importance of fuel supply on the Gaza side to facilitate the distribution of humanitarian aid. However, Israel has expressed concerns that imported fuel could be used by Hamas for the production of weapons and explosives. The convoy, organized by the UN World Food Programme and the World Health Organization, includes 60 metric tons of emergency food, canned goods, wheat flour, pasta, canned beans, and canned tomato paste. The World Health Organization has also provided trauma medicines, essential drugs, and supplies for the treatment of chronic diseases. The involvement of the United States in advocating for aid delivery is noteworthy, with President Joe Biden pushing for the trucks to be allowed to pass during his recent solidarity visit to Israel. Biden made it clear that this delivery is a test for a system of aid distribution that prevents Hamas from benefitting. UN agencies will be responsible for distributing the aid within Gaza. As the trucks carrying humanitarian aid enter Gaza, hopes are high that this is just the beginning of sustained efforts to provide crucial support to the people in need. The international community, led by the United Nations, must continue working together to ensure ongoing aid delivery, allowing the people of Gaza to access essential supplies for their well-being and survival.
