A 17-year-old shooter is facing adult charges after injuring a 16-year-old in Greenfield, Indiana. The shooter, whose identity is being withheld, will have an initial hearing in Hancock County Circuit Court on August 14th. The county prosecutor, Brent Eaton, plans to request that the case be moved to adult court.

The incident occurred on August 6th on the east side of Greenfield. The victim was shot in the stomach and was initially taken to Hancock Regional Hospital before being transferred to an Indianapolis hospital. Thankfully, he is expected to recover from his injuries.

Chief Brian Hartman of the Greenfield Police Department has expressed concerns over the rising number of juveniles involved in serious crimes in the area. He stated that many young people are gaining access to illegal firearms and drugs, leading to an increase in violent incidents.

Prosecutor Eaton has filed a waiver to charge the 17-year-old shooter as an adult, citing preliminary charges of aggravated battery and other gun crimes. However, since the shooter is a juvenile, the prosecutor’s office will need permission from a county judge to proceed with adult charges. This request will be reviewed in a separate hearing where evidence will be presented.

The shooter is currently being held in a juvenile custody facility in Pendleton. As the case unfolds, the judge will determine whether it should be moved to adult court.

It is essential to address the issue of young individuals involved in criminal activities and ensure accountability for their actions. The Greenfield community, along with law enforcement officials, is focused on curbing these behaviors and bringing those responsible to justice.

Overall, this incident highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to address the rising trend of juveniles engaging in criminal behavior. It is crucial to provide support and guidance to young individuals, steering them away from negative influences and fostering a safer community for all.
