Bombay, Dec. 31: One hundred and sixty-three Indian job-seekers, who arrived in Sharjah as illegal immigrants, met a tragic fate when the launch carrying them sank off Dubai on December 10, as per reports. Disturbingly, only 152 survivors from the vessel are now serving jail terms in Dubai after being deported.

Initial accounts of the disaster had been received through air passengers and cables from Dubai, but a clearer picture of the mishap emerged with a letter sent by 30 survivors to the Kerala Muslim Association. A representative of the association shared their heart-wrenching plight, stating, Some of the victims are known to us. The survivors desperately need our help. But what can we do?

The survivors’ letter revealed a distressing tale: A total of 315 Indians from Bombay had boarded launches bound for Dubai, lured by the alluring promises of wealth told by fellow Indians settled in the oil-rich Gulf States. However, none of them possessed valid documents. Trouble struck when the authorities in Sharjah apprehended the illegal immigrants upon arrival, promptly detaining them. The Indian Mission in Dubai disowned the immigrants, claiming they failed to provide any proof of their nationality. Consequently, the Sharjah authorities forcibly deported the 315 Indians back to India on a small, ill-equipped launch.

The survivors highlighted the vessel’s inadequacy, stating, Our humble pleas against cramming us into a small boat fell on deaf ears. It was already leaking when we boarded, and it slowly sank shortly after setting sail.

This tragic incident sheds light on the vulnerabilities faced by desperate job-seekers who fall prey to promises of a better life abroad. The situation raises important questions about the responsibility of governments, both in India and West Asia, to ensure the safety and protection of individuals seeking employment opportunities abroad.

As more details emerge, the need for support and assistance for the survivors has become evident. Organizations such as the Kerala Muslim Association and other humanitarian groups must come together to provide aid and solace to those affected by this devastating disaster.

In the wake of this tragedy, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with illegal immigration and the importance of ensuring that all individuals seeking employment abroad follow legal channels. It is crucial for governments to establish stronger frameworks and support systems to prevent such unfortunate incidents from recurring.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those who perished in this catastrophe. May they find strength in the face of this immense loss, and may the survivors receive the assistance they so desperately need in these trying times.
