Zimbabwe’s Development Hindered by Citizen Apathy and Support for Incompetent Government
Zimbabwe has long faced numerous challenges when it comes to its development and progress as a nation. While many attribute these difficulties to the corrupt and inept government in power, there is another factor that often goes unnoticed – the apathy and lack of interest among the ordinary citizens themselves.
According to a concerned citizen, the main obstacle to Zimbabwe’s development is not solely the government’s blatant corruption and looting of national resources for personal gain, but rather the unwillingness of the people to actively seek prosperous lives. The citizen argues that the power to elect capable leaders and remove those who are ruining their livelihoods lies squarely with the citizens themselves.
In an upcoming election, scheduled for August 23, 2023, Zimbabweans have the opportunity to exercise their unalienable right to determine their own destiny by electing ward councillors, members of parliament, and the president. This is the essence of democracy – the power of the people to shape their own future.
However, it is disheartening to witness some citizens not only voting for and supporting the ruling elite, but also defending their destructive actions that have led to the impoverishment of the nation. It is perplexing to see individuals who should be living comfortable lives settling for a hand-to-mouth existence.
The citizen questions the logic behind the support and celebration of so-called ’empowerment projects’ that offer little more than the ability to pay rent or buy second-hand clothes, while citizens of other countries with similar levels of education and skills enjoy relative comfort and prosperity.
The article highlights the irony of organizations such as Mahwindi, Vendors, Teachers, Nurses, Lawyers for ED, which are pro-Mnangagwa, the very leader responsible for the suffering of these individuals. It begs the question of why people would align themselves with those who have crushed their dreams and ambitions.
The citizen emphasizes that the authority to govern is derived from the people, and therefore, it is the responsibility of the citizenry to demand transparent and competent leadership. Holding those in power accountable and removing those who fail to deliver the desired livelihoods is crucial for the country’s improvement.
While it is true that the extent of a country’s development is directly proportional to the citizens’ desire to prosper, it is equally important not to tolerate or accept mediocrity. Celebrating substandard living conditions only perpetuates the suffering.
In conclusion, Zimbabwe’s development is hindered not only by a corrupt government but also by the apathy and unwillingness of its citizens to demand better leadership. The upcoming election provides an opportunity for Zimbabweans to take charge of their own destiny and work towards a prosperous future. It is only when the citizens hold their leaders accountable that the country can truly flourish.
