Zimbabwean Students Abroad Contributing to Economic Development through Essential Qualifications
Zimbabwean students pursuing tertiary education abroad are playing a crucial role in the country’s economic development, according to Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Ambassador Frederick Shava. During a recent visit to Havana, Cuba, Minister Shava met with Zimbabwean students studying medicine and engineering at a courtesy call organized on the sidelines of the G77+China Summit.
Minister Shava, who led Zimbabwe’s delegation to the summit, emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting these students. Following the summit, he personally handed over an assortment of groceries and $1,000 USD to each student, a gift from President Mnangagwa.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Minister Shava said, The qualifications you are pursuing are the ones we really need back home. We are happy to hear that you are studying medicine and engineering. These skills are in high demand in Zimbabwe, and we want you to come back home after completing your studies to contribute to the development of our nation and serve your people.
Acknowledging the importance of a conducive learning environment, Minister Shava assured the students of the government’s determination to provide any necessary assistance. He highlighted the commendable work done by their colleagues back home in producing equipment used to respond to the global Covid-19 pandemic, which received recognition from the World Health Organisation and other countries.
Trust Mabaya, a final year medical student, expressed his eagerness to serve his country. He stated, When I graduate, I want to come back home and serve in Zimbabwe. However, if an opportunity arises, I would like to further advance my education and return as a specialist doctor.
Petronella Usayi, also a medical student, thanked the government for its support in their education. She emphasized the desire to tap into the expertise and experience of the Cuban medical training institutions they are attending, in order to contribute to Zimbabwe’s healthcare system.
Highlighting the importance of engineering, Tavona Mukachana, an engineering student, expressed his commitment to returning home and contributing to the development of the country.
Zimbabwe sees these students as key contributors to its vision of achieving an upper middle-income society. The government aims to create a fair global order that fosters the development aspirations of the developing world, a mission shared by the G77+China Summit.
With ongoing support from the government, Zimbabwean students studying abroad have the opportunity to acquire essential qualifications that will have a significant impact on the country’s economic development. The government’s investment in their education reflects its commitment to nurturing talent and expertise, ensuring that these students can effectively contribute to the nation’s growth upon their return.
