Yuba College Football Struggles Continue with Season-Opening Loss to Monterey Peninsula

Yuba College’s football team kicked off their season on a disappointing note as they suffered a 22-6 loss to Monterey Peninsula College. This defeat marks their 20th consecutive loss, dating back to 2019, and prolongs their streak of winless seasons.

Despite the unfavorable outcome, sophomore defensive back Thomas Fasig maintains that this Yuba College program is different from previous years. He emphasized the team’s unity and physicality during the second quarter of the game. According to Fasig, they need to stay composed, play as a cohesive unit, and showcase their strengths on the field.

Yuba College did have some standout moments, particularly on defense. They managed to force turnovers in both halves and scored a touchdown when freshman corner Jaden Sparks intercepted a pass and returned it 38 yards for the score. This impressive play helped trim the halftime deficit to a single point, with Monterey Peninsula leading 7-6.

However, the offensive struggles persisted for Yuba College. Led by freshman quarterback Trevor Hargis, the team found it challenging to move the ball effectively throughout the game. Costly mistakes further hindered their progress, including a touchdown pass by Hargis to Hunter Clary being nullified due to an illegal forward pass and unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. These setbacks resulted in numerous punts by Hudson Beers, who transitioned from quarterback to punter in the 2022 season.

Monterey Peninsula, known for their strong offensive performances, found their rhythm in the third quarter. They extended their lead to 14-6 with a 22-yard touchdown run by Kieryus Boone. Facing a double-digit deficit, Yuba College attempted a fake punt to spark their offense. Beers, displaying his versatility, connected with freshman Pablo Arana for a 35-yard gain. However, the drive stalled, and Monterey Peninsula regained possession.

Although the Monterey Peninsula offense struggled at times, they benefitted from favorable situations, such as a punt that rolled all the way to the 49er 1-yard line. On the ensuing play, they tackled the Yuba College ballcarrier in the end zone for a safety, increasing their lead to 16-6 late in the third quarter.

Yuba College’s determination to end their losing streak was evident, with the defense making a stand deep in their red zone during the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, their offensive struggles persisted, requiring the defense to repeatedly return to the field to defend against an offense that averaged close to 330 yards per game last season. Eventually, the Lobos found the end zone again, extending their lead to 22-6.

Yuba College head coach, Mike Pomfret, expressed disappointment with the loss but commended his players for their resilience and toughness. He emphasized that not every game can be won and acknowledged the team’s grit and perseverance.

Fasig credited the change in coaching staff and renewed energy within the program for their improved mindset. He highlighted the sense of unity and coordination that now exists within the team, signifying their readiness to support each other and face any challenges together.

Looking ahead, Yuba College aims to break their multi-season losing streak when they face Hartnell College on the road next Saturday. Hartnell had a 3-7 record last year and is a member of the American Golden Coast Conference. Yuba College’s next home game will take place on September 16 against Cabrillo College, another member of the American Golden Coast Conference.

While Yuba College experienced another setback in their season opener, the players remain optimistic about their new direction under the guidance of the coaching staff. They believe they have the potential to turn things around and compete at a higher level. Only time will tell if the revamped program can translate their determination into victories on the gridiron.
