A young girl in Cambridge, Vermont, is safe and recovering after being rescued from an icy pond by Vermont state troopers. The incident occurred on December 17 when the girl and her siblings were playing near the pond on private property. Tragically, the thin ice broke, causing two of the children to fall into the frigid water. While one child was able to be pulled to safety by an 80-year-old homeowner, a trooper was needed to rescue the other child.

Trooper Michelle Archer, who happened to be on routine patrol nearby, responded to the distress call. Dash cam and bodycam footage obtained by WCAX captured Archer’s heroic actions as she quickly grabbed a floating device, secured it to the cruiser with a rope, and courageously jumped into the icy pond. Despite the freezing temperatures, Archer’s instincts kicked in, and she was able to pull the young girl to safety within minutes.

For Archer, panic was not an option. She stated, Something took over and I just kicked into gear. I don’t know if it was my training or instinct, but panic wasn’t a thought at that moment. Trooper Keith Cote arrived at the scene shortly after Archer had rescued the girl. He commended her strength and determination, recognizing the difficulty of carrying the young girl, who was wet and cold, to safety.

Initially, the girl’s injuries were believed to be life-threatening, and she was rushed to the hospital. However, she has since made a full recovery and has been discharged to her home. The Vermont State Police has recommended Troopers Archer and Cote, along with the homeowner, for the agency’s Lifesaving Award, recognizing their selfless and heroic actions.

This heartwarming story serves as a reminder of the bravery and dedication displayed by law enforcement officers on a daily basis. In this instance, Trooper Michelle Archer’s quick thinking, training, and fearlessness prevented a potential tragedy and ensured the safe return of an eight-year-old girl. The Vermont State Police’s recognition of their exceptional efforts emphasizes the importance of honoring those who go above and beyond to protect and serve their communities.

As we reflect on this extraordinary rescue, let us also recognize the resilience and strength of the young girl who endured such a harrowing experience. Her recovery serves as an inspiration to us all, reminding us of the power of hope and the importance of cherishing every moment.
