Kevin Costner, star of the hit TV show Yellowstone, has requested that his estranged wife, Christine Costner, cover over $99,000 in legal fees as part of their prenuptial agreement. Court documents filed on Monday state that if either party retains counsel to enforce or prevent a breach of the prenuptial agreement, the prevailing party is entitled to reimbursement for all associated costs and expenses from the non-prevailing party.
Christine, a former handbag designer currently unemployed, has expressed her reluctance to touch the funds set aside for her in the prenuptial agreement, fearing that it may compromise her legal standing in the divorce. In a previous filing, she and her legal team also requested that Kevin provide an additional $350,000 in attorney’s fees and $150,000 in forensic costs due to the vast difference in resources available to the parties.
Kevin’s focus on the prenuptial agreement’s validity has been criticized by Christine’s legal team, who argue that it is premature and irrelevant to her request for child support and fees. They highlight that Kevin is doing all he can to minimize his obligation to his children.
Christine had previously requested $248,000 per month in child support for their three children, arguing that this amount is necessary to maintain their accustomed lifestyle. She also sought additional financial support for private school tuition, extracurricular activities, sports costs, and healthcare expenses.
Kevin, on the other hand, countered the request, deeming it highly inflated and unsubstantiated. He asserts that providing the minor children with more than bare necessities does not require providing ludicrous extravagance primarily benefiting the supported parent.
The couple married in 2004, and their prenuptial agreement was established a decade after Kevin reportedly paid his ex-wife, Cindy Silva, $80 million in his first divorce. The court date to address Kevin’s request for legal fee coverage is set for August 2.
The ongoing legal battle between Kevin and Christine highlights the complexities and challenges that can arise during a divorce. Both parties have their arguments and concerns, and it will be up to the court to determine a fair resolution.
