YC Selects 229 Startups, Emphasizes AI Dominance and Diverse Demographics for Summer 2023 Batch

Y Combinator (YC), a renowned startup accelerator, has announced its selection of 229 startups for its Summer 2023 batch. The selection process was highly competitive, with YC receiving an astonishing 24,000 applications. Notably, the accelerator chose to support very early-stage companies, with 75 percent of the selected startups entering the program without generating any revenue on day one. Impressively, 81 percent of these startups had never raised any external funding before joining YC.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) played a prominent role in the selection process, reflecting its growing significance in the startup ecosystem. Garry Tan, a partner at YC, emphasized the impact of AI, stating, You’ll notice AI has a big presence in the S23 class — this is no accident. Recent developments in AI have unlocked an entire universe of possibilities, presenting a resoundingly clear answer to the question of ‘Why now?’.

While B2B Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) startups dominated the batch, accounting for 70 percent of the selected companies, there was also representation from other key verticals. Fintech and healthcare each comprised 10 percent of the batch, while consumer-focused startups made up 6 percent. Proptech/industrials rounded out the selection with 4 percent.

YC also highlighted its commitment to diversity among the selected startups. The accelerator recognized the importance of diverse demographics and celebrated the founders from various backgrounds. Among the batch, 16 percent have Asian founders, 12 percent are of South Asian origin, 2 percent are Black, 3 percent are Hispanic or Latinx, 3 percent are Middle Eastern or North African, 6 percent are multiracial, and 29 percent have White founders. Additionally, 15 percent of the companies have a woman founder, with 10 percent of the founders being women.

Investors looking to engage with YC startups received guidance from Garry Tan. He encouraged investors to make quick decisions, act as long-term owners, and offer meaningful assistance to the startups they choose to invest in. Importantly, he urged investors not to harm startups if they have no intention of investing, emphasizing the importance of a supportive ecosystem.

Y Combinator is also expanding its influence in India, having invested in several Indian startups and witnessing their significant growth. Last year, 10 Indian companies, including Meesho, Clear, Groww, and Khatabook, made it to YC’s top companies list, further highlighting YC’s focus on the Indian startup ecosystem.

The selection of startups for YC’s Summer 2023 batch showcases the dominant role of AI in the startup landscape. By supporting early-stage companies and promoting diversity, YC continues to contribute to the growth and success of the global startup ecosystem.
