Yankees Fall Short in Weekend Series against Red Sox, Anthony Volpe’s Performance Impressive
In a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees faced a tough weekend, succumbing to a sweep and being outscored by a margin of 22-9. The Red Sox dominated every aspect of the series, except for the final game on Sunday, where the Yankees put up a fight but ultimately fell short with a score of 6-5.
Shortstop Anthony Volpe played a crucial role in the Yankees’ effort to stage a comeback in the seventh inning. He showcased his skills by hitting a three-run homer to right center field, enabling the team to even the score.
We showed tremendous fight throughout the game. Despite falling behind, we never gave up and battled back, stated Volpe during YES Network’s postgame coverage. We had strong at-bats and played well for all 27 outs. We will carry this momentum into the next series after the day off.
Volpe had an opportunity to become the hero once again in the eighth inning when he believed he had secured his fourth RBI of the game. The rookie hit a single to left field, allowing Isaiah Kiner-Falefa to score from first base, while Rob Refsnyder charged for the ball. However, the play took an unfavorable turn for the Yankees when Refsnyder slipped on the grass, leading to an overturned call by the umpires in favor of the Red Sox.

The Boston Red Sox have proven to be a formidable opponent for the Yankees this season, as they have emerged victorious in eight out of nine matchups between the two teams. With only a four-game series left at Fenway Park in September, New York finds themselves outscored 54-24 by the Red Sox. Despite these challenges, the Yankees recognize the talent in their rival’s lineup.
They are a really strong team with excellent pitching and an array of skilled hitters, acknowledged Volpe.
Pitcher Clarke Schmidt delivered a solid performance for the Yankees, pitching 5 2/3 innings and giving up two runs on four hits, including a solo home run to Rafael Devers in the first inning.
Schmidt commended Devers for his exceptional skills, saying, You have to give credit to Devers. He’s a special player and is currently seeing the ball really well. Apart from a few at-bats against Devers, overall, I believe I had a good outing.
With a record of 60-64 this season, the New York Yankees are at risk of finishing below .500 for the first time in 30 years. They are currently on an eight-game losing streak, the longest since 1995. Additionally, they are in last place in the American League East and sit nine games out of a playoff spot with 38 games remaining in the season. However, the team remains resolute and is not ready to give up on their season just yet.
These losing streaks are disheartening because we know our capabilities and believe we can turn things around, expressed Volpe. We will continue to put in the hard work, day by day, and I think everyone is determined to change the current situation. Whether or not anyone has experienced this before, I can say that everyone is feeling frustrated.
While the Red Sox currently hold a six-game lead over the Yankees, they are also actively vying for a spot in the AL wild-card race, sitting three games behind the Seattle Mariners. Boston will now travel to Houston for a four-game series against the Astros, while New York will host the Washington Nationals for a three-game series starting on Tuesday.
