Y Combinator Calls for Startups in AI, Spatial Computing, and Climate Tech

Y Combinator, the renowned startup incubator, has released a fresh call for startups, seeking entrepreneurs in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), spatial computing, and climate technology. The announcement came through a blog post shared by Dalton Caldwell, the Managing Director of YC. This update, known as the Request for Startups (RFS), is a tradition that Y Combinator started in 2009.

The previous update to the Request for Startups list dates back to 2018. However, YC did make specific calls for startups in certain areas since then, such as those related to the Covid-19 pandemic and government 2.0 startups. YC also emphasized the need for more climate tech solutions in 2022.

Climate tech has once again gained prominence in the new list, showcasing YC’s commitment to addressing urgent environmental challenges. While the focus on Covid-19 has shifted, healthcare remains a top priority. YC is looking for startups dedicated to ending cancer, developing foundational models for biological systems, introducing the managed service organization model for healthcare, and eliminating intermediaries in the healthcare sector.

Unsurprisingly, AI technology features prominently in the new list. YC is particularly interested in machine learning applications, including ML applied to robotics and simulating the physical world. Another area of focus is explainable AI, which aims to enhance transparency and understanding in AI decision-making processes. The organization also seeks startups that specialize in small fine-tuned AI models, large language models (LLMs) for manual back-office processes, AI for building enterprise software, and improved enterprise glue. Additionally, YC is interested in enterprise resource planning software and defense technology startups. It also wants to support new space companies and startups aiming to bring manufacturing back to the United States.

YC also acknowledges the potential of spatial computing, spurred by Apple’s recent launch of the Vision Pro. This emerging field involves startups developing for the mixed reality environment introduced by AR/VR headsets like the Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3.

However, digital currencies and crypto technologies receive limited attention in the new list, with only one request related to stablecoin finance, which involves digital currencies pegged to traditional fiat currencies like the U.S. dollar.

While YC remains open to considering startups outside these specific categories, the RFS serves as a valuable tool for entrepreneurs to identify areas likely to receive attention from investors and funding.

Dalton Caldwell expressed hopes that the new list would inspire founders to explore new possibilities and apply to Y Combinator. Applications for YC’s Summer 2034 batch are now open, with a deadline of February 20, 2034.

In summary, Y Combinator has unveiled a fresh call for startups in AI, spatial computing, climate tech, and other domains. By highlighting these areas of interest, YC aims to support innovative entrepreneurs who can push the boundaries of technology and make a lasting impact.
