Exonerated Jacksonville man who spent 42 years in prison dies 5 years after release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Clifford Williams, a Jacksonville man who was wrongfully convicted of murder in 1976 and spent 42 years in prison before being released just five years ago, has passed away at the age of 80, according to his family.

Williams and his nephew were accused of killing a woman and injuring another, but an investigation later revealed that there was insufficient evidence against them. Surprisingly, another man eventually confessed to the shooting, although he was never charged or investigated. Unfortunately, he has since passed away, leaving many unanswered questions about the case.

After decades of wrongful imprisonment, Williams was finally released in 2019. The state acknowledged its mistake in 2020 when Williams received a compensation of $2.15 million from the government.

In an interview with News4JAX in 2020, Williams revealed an unexpected diagnosis of prostate cancer. He expressed gratitude for the medical care he had received, stating, The last year, they’ve been fighting over at Shands [for me]. And now I’m cancer-free. It’ll be a year March 28 this year.

The case of Clifford Williams highlights the injustices that can occur within the criminal justice system. Spending over four decades behind bars for a crime he did not commit undoubtedly took a toll on Williams and his loved ones. The fact that the true perpetrator was never held accountable only adds to the complexity and tragedy of this story.

While the compensation Williams received can never fully compensate for the years he lost, it does bring some measure of justice for the immense suffering he endured. However, it is a bittersweet victory, as Williams’ time in freedom was cut short by his recent passing.

Williams’ death serves as a reminder of the urgent need for criminal justice reform, including improved investigative procedures, fair trials, and just compensation for those wrongfully convicted. The impact of wrongful imprisonment can last a lifetime, and it is our collective responsibility to prevent such travesties of justice from happening in the future.

As we mourn the loss of Clifford Williams, his story will continue to inspire advocates for justice and serve as a rallying cry for ending the systemic flaws that lead to wrongful convictions. It is our hope that through continued efforts and reforms, no other innocent individual will have to endure the unimaginable suffering that Williams went through.
