A wrong-way driver fleeing from Michigan State Police caused a fatal crash on the Lodge Freeway, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to the driver and passenger of the fleeing vehicle. The incident occurred in Detroit on January 6, 2024, at approximately 1:30 a.m. State troopers discovered a stolen Ford Super Duty pickup truck at a gas station on 8 Mile Road. As the troopers approached, the driver of the truck reversed dangerously close to their patrol car before speeding off onto 8 Mile Road, near the Southfield Freeway.

Officers initiated a pursuit, but the driver refused to stop and continued heading north on the Lodge Freeway. In an attempt to evade capture, the suspect then exited onto northbound Telegraph Road and turned off his headlights. Shortly after, he made a U-turn and started driving southbound on Telegraph Road. Without reactivating his headlights, the driver re-entered the northbound lanes of the Lodge Freeway, traveling in the wrong direction.

Tragically, the wrong-way driver collided with a 2011 GMC Terrain that was traveling northbound near Civic Center Drive. The impact claimed the lives of the 45-year-old male driver and the 43-year-old female passenger from Farmington Hills. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The wrong-way driver has been identified as a 35-year-old man from Romulus, while his passenger is a 29-year-old woman from Detroit. Although both are currently listed in serious condition at a local hospital, medical professionals expect them to survive.

The authorities are conducting an ongoing investigation into the crash to determine further details and the events leading up to the tragic incident.

This devastating accident highlights the dangers of reckless driving and the tragic consequences it can have on innocent lives. The Michigan State Police continue their efforts to maintain road safety by apprehending individuals who disregard traffic laws and put others at risk. It serves as a stark reminder for all drivers to prioritize their safety and the safety of others on the road at all times.
