Two Massachusetts residents dead after wrong-way driver crashes into two vehicles Christmas night

SOMERSET, Mass. – Two people were tragically killed, and three others injured, when a wrong-way driver collided with two vehicles on Christmas night in Somerset, Massachusetts.

The incident occurred on the westbound side of Route 6 at the Veterans Memorial Bridge, prompting a swift response from State Police. According to State Police Spokesperson David Procopio, the crash was reported at approximately 11:10 p.m. An investigation revealed that a 2023 Land Rover with New York registration was traveling eastbound on the westbound side of Route 6 when it collided into a 2019 Honda Accord and a 2014 Infiniti QX50.

Sadly, two individuals inside the Infiniti, a 73-year-old man from Dighton and a teenage boy, lost their lives as a result of the crash. Another passenger of the Infiniti, a 68-year-old woman from Dighton, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital. In addition, two young adults who were traveling inside the Honda were also hospitalized for their injuries but are expected to recover.

The wrong-way driver has been identified as 41-year-old Adam M. Gauthier from New York City. It is believed that Gauthier was driving under the influence at the time of the accident. Although he is currently hospitalized due to his injuries, which are not life-threatening, he is expected to survive. Gauthier is now under State Police guard and will face several charges, including:

The crash prompted a closure of the area surrounding Route 6 for several hours on Christmas night and into Tuesday morning, as investigators worked diligently to determine the cause of the accident and gather crucial evidence.
