Wrexham’s manager, Phil Parkinson, has opened up about the challenges facing Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s team in the transfer window. Although talks have been initiated with several players, they have yet to sign anyone. Overseeing the Welsh club’s National League title triumph, Parkinson admits that they face a real challenge to improve their squad ahead of the upcoming Football League season. The obstacle at hand stems from the fact that their starting XI is already strong, making it tough to sign better players.
In an interview with The Leader, Parkinson explained that we have spoken to a lot of players, and we are in discussions with clubs. Like I keep saying, we have got a good squad, and to get better players than the ones we have already got is really tough. He added that if two or three players become available that they feel will improve the squad, they will go all out to get them.
Owners Reynolds and McElhenney could potentially guide a major summer of spending, but they have already suffered two rejections. Jonny Williams opted against the club and instead moved to Gillingham, while Charlton are on the verge of signing fellow target Alfie May.
However, Wrexham’s pre-season friendlies against Manchester United and Chelsea in the USA have the potential to provide some much-needed exposure and attract promising talent. Parkinson concluded that we have targeted the ones we want and are in discussions with those clubs, but at this time of the year, things take time for many different reasons. Despite ideally wanting the whole squad together prior to pre-season, every manager knows that never happens.
