Wrexham’s promotion to League Two has posed a challenge for the club as they try to find players to strengthen their already strong squad. Phil Parkinson, the Wrexham manager, has admitted that getting better players than the ones we have already got is really tough. Wrexham, owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have thrown in a lot of money to attract several players, including star striker Paul Mullin, who joined the non-league Wrexham from Cambridge United. Ben Foster, the ex-England and Manchester United goalkeeper, also came out of retirement to join his former club, Wrexham.
Wrexham’s spending power has given them an edge in attracting players to drop down the leagues, however, Parkinson says it’s difficult to find players of a higher caliber than the ones they currently have. Despite their challenges, Wrexham have managed to persuade goalkeeper Ben Foster to continue with the team for another season, having initially joined for eight games to help Wrexham seal their promotion.
It is clear that Wrexham is taking their time in finding the right players to improve their already solid squad. Parkinson says they are in discussions with clubs about the players they want, but it takes time for things to come together. They are waiting to sign the players they feel will make a real difference to the team and are content with the strong squad they currently have.
Wrexham’s co-owners have certainly put in a significant amount of resources to bolster the club, and with Foster’s addition to the squad, the team looks poised to make a run for back-to-back promotions. Parkinson is eagerly looking forward to reuniting with his team when they commence pre-season training on June 29th, with the hope to secure the few additional players they need to truly strengthen the club’s overall performance.
