Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav has stated that the ruling party, BJP, has damaged the country’s reputation internationally with their mistreatment of women wrestlers. He believes that this is an indication of the party’s feudal mindset, which has made India look bad in the eyes of the democratic world. Yadav referenced media reports that detailed the women wrestlers’ accounts of sexual harassment and their attempts to publicize the issue, which resulted in their eviction from the protest site and the removal of their Olympic medals. Yadav criticized the Government’s inaction on the matter, particularly in not arresting the accused BJP MP, who maintains his innocence. Akhilesh’s statement comes a few weeks ahead of important state assembly elections.
