Sad details of Olympian’s death as star cyclist husband charged
World champion cyclist Melissa Hoskins tragically lost her life after being struck by a vehicle allegedly driven by her husband, former star cyclist Rohan Dennis. Just days before the incident, Dennis shared an Instagram post featuring a happy photo of himself with Hoskins and their two children, with a caption that read, Merry Christmas from our family to yours. The incident occurred on December 31 in Adelaide, Australia, where Hoskins was allegedly hit by a ute in the city’s inner-north. She was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with severe injuries but unfortunately passed away a few hours later.
Following the incident, South Australian Police arrested Dennis, who is now facing several charges including causing death by dangerous driving, driving without due care, and endangering life. Although released on bail, he is scheduled to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court in March.
Authorities have revealed that Hoskins may have jumped onto the car bonnet and grabbed a door handle before falling to the ground as the vehicle was driven away, possibly resulting in her being dragged along. Two teenage neighbors attempted to administer first aid until paramedics arrived.
The news of Hoskins’ untimely demise has shaken the sporting community, with various organizations and fellow cyclists paying tribute to the talented athlete. The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), for which Hoskins competed in the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games, expressed their deep sadness at the loss. They extended their condolences to her family, friends, and the entire cycling community during this incredibly difficult time.
AusCycling, the national governing body for cycling in Australia, also mourned the tragedy, describing it as a tragic incident. Marne Fechner, the chief executive of AusCycling, highlighted Hoskins’ exceptional talent and her profound impact on those around her. Fechner emphasized that Hoskins’ achievements, both on and off the track, made her an inspiration to many.
Anna Meares, a retired track cyclist and recently appointed chef de mission of the Australian Olympic Team for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, also expressed her condolences, speaking of her heavy heart and sending thoughts to the couple’s children, family, and friends.
Hoskins, originally from Perth, achieved remarkable success in her cycling career, winning gold in the women’s team pursuit at the 2015 world championships. She represented GreenEDGE, now known as Jayco-AlUla, during her cycling journey. The team released a statement expressing their profound grief and offering their condolences to Hoskins’ loved ones and the wider cycling community.
Apart from her Olympic and world championship achievements, Hoskins was also a beloved wife and mother. She retired from professional cycling in 2017, while Dennis continued to excel in the sport. Known for his podium finishes at the Olympics and his stage win in the 2015 Tour de France, Dennis retired from professional cycling at the end of 2023.
