World champion road cyclist Mathieu van der Poel has attributed his thrilling win to the kind hospitality of a Scottish couple who allowed him to use their toilet. The Dutch superstar found himself caught short after protestors disrupted the race in the Carron Valley, near Falkirk, and feared that his chances of victory were in jeopardy. However, the rider was graciously welcomed into the home of Davie Findlay and his wife Shona, where he took care of his urgent business.

Van der Poel expressed his gratitude via Dutch TV, emphasizing that he would not have been able to win the race without the couple’s help. He acknowledged that it was the most crucial part of the race and referred to it as a big massive message that he had to deliver at the Findlays. The cyclist credited their kindness for enabling him to continue racing, stating, I couldn’t have carried on racing without their help. It was the biggest race of my life, and it was so kind of these people to let me in their house and let me sit on their toilet.

Davie, 58, was delighted to have played a vital role in the champion’s victory, which attracted millions of viewers worldwide. The fortuitous turn of events occurred when protestors caused a delay in the race, just a few yards away from Davie and Shona’s house. Initially, they were asked by the team manager to allow one rider to use their facilities, and Davie discovered later that it was Mathieu van der Poel himself. Subsequently, several other riders sought refuge in their home during the lull in the race.

Davie expressed his surprise at the unexpected turn of events, remarking that they simply offered some hospitality, as any neighbor would have done. Unaware of the winner’s identity until the following day due to a lack of phone or WiFi reception, Davie expressed his sheer enthusiasm for having assisted the renowned cyclist: I heard that Mathieu had a very nice message for us, so if we’re able to respond to that, I’d like to tell him that he’s very welcome, and I’m thrilled that we could help him in any way.

In a display of bravery, Mathieu van der Poel overcame the formidable challenges posed by the world’s top road riders, despite enduring a bruising crash during the final lap of the 271-kilometer race. Undeterred by a broken shoe sustained on the rain-soaked roads, the 28-year-old sprinted to victory in the last 25 kilometers. Belgium’s Wout van Aert secured the silver, while Slovenia’s Tadej Pogacar edged out Denmark’s Mads Pedersen for the bronze. The protest-induced delay resulted in the arrest of five individuals.

The Glasgow course, consisting of ten laps and stretching over a 14-kilometer section, captivated cycling fans worldwide. It witnessed a masterful performance by Mathieu van der Poel as he triumphed over grueling climbs while others faltered. Reflecting on his win, the Dutch champion declared, It means everything. It was one of my biggest goals, and to win it today is amazing. It almost completes my career in my opinion, it’s almost my biggest victory on the road.

Despite the mishap, Mathieu remained focused on securing victory, asserting that he had not taken any unnecessary risks. However, the unpredictably slippery conditions caused him to crash abruptly. Despite the setback, he managed to recover and secure the title. While the fall did not enhance his overall experience, Mathieu acknowledged that if it had cost him the world title, he would have been unable to sleep for several days.

The race garnered mixed reviews from riders, with some expressing discontentment with the Glasgow course before the event. However, it ultimately proved to be one of the most exceptional world race championships to date, captivating audiences worldwide. The incident involving protestors turned Davie and Shona’s home into a focal point of global news for around an hour. The couple’s simple act of kindness rendered them integral to the narrative of an unforgettable victory for Mathieu van der Poel.
