World AMR Awareness Week is being observed from 18-24 November to address the urgent issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites become resistant to the medications designed to treat them. This leads to difficulties in treating infections and increased risks of disease spread and severe illness. The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified AMR as one of the top 10 global public health threats. The main driver of AMR is the misuse and overuse of antimicrobials. While many countries have developed national action plans (NAPs) to combat AMR, recent data reveals gaps in their implementation. Only 68% of countries are actively implementing elements of their plans, highlighting the need for stronger governance, leadership, and financial support. To address AMR, WHO has developed the Access, Watch, Reserve (AWaRe) antibiotic book, providing guidance for optimal treatment. World AMR Awareness Week aims to promote joint actions by leaders and communities to protect human, animal, plant, and environmental health. The UN General Assembly High-Level meeting on AMR in 2024 will urge countries to take bold commitments and accelerated action against AMR. Immediate steps must be taken to preserve antimicrobial effectiveness and safeguard public health for future generations.
