Global revenues from women’s sport are predicted to surpass the US$1 billion mark in 2024, according to financial experts Deloitte. The surge in popularity is expected to drive revenues to reach US$1.28 billion. With the upcoming Fifa Women’s World Cup, football alone is expected to generate revenues of US$555 million. While women’s football in Europe has experienced growth, more than 50% of total revenue for women’s sport is still generated in North America. Deloitte also anticipates an increase in team and league valuations, with some teams projected to exceed $100 million next year.
Jennifer Haskel, insights lead for Deloitte’s Sports Business Group, commented on the growth of women’s sport, saying, Over the last few years, we have seen exceptional growth in women’s sport across the globe, driving a significant uplift in its commercial value, which in turn has led to growing interest from investors. Haskel emphasized that women’s sport is increasingly seen as a unique product that distinguishes itself from men’s elite sport, leading to increased fan and investor engagement. This, in turn, presents new opportunities for clubs and leagues, such as greater commercial partnerships, increased participation, and larger match days.
As the popularity of women’s sport continues to soar, it is expected that there will be an increase in prime-time broadcasting slots and visibility on streaming platforms. While commercial income still contributes over 50% of total revenue, this percentage is decreasing due to larger broadcast deals and increased match-day attendances.
Overall, the projected growth in revenues showcases the rising commercial value of women’s sport worldwide, highlighting its distinct appeal and potential for further expansion. With the anticipated increase in funding and exposure, women’s sport is poised for a future filled with exciting possibilities and continued success.
