Australia and West Indies Share Points as Women’s ODI Abandoned due to Rain

The second women’s ODI between Australia and West Indies was unfortunately abandoned due to rain at the Junction Oval in Melbourne. This resulted in both teams receiving just one point each in the ICC Women’s Championship race.

Australia won the toss and decided to bowl first, taking advantage of the overcast conditions. Their decision seemed effective as they restricted the West Indies Women to 107/8 in a shortened game of 29 overs per side, following a 3.5-hour rain delay.

Alana King and Annabel Sutherland performed exceptionally well for Australia, each taking three wickets. Hayley Matthews, who returned after being rested in the series opener, displayed good form with a run-a-ball 20, including four boundaries. Her opening partner Rashada Williams made a patient 23 off 33 deliveries.

Alana King expressed her satisfaction with her performance, but lamented the fact that the match was abandoned. She said, I was just stoked they were coming out really nicely and have been for a few weeks now. It was great to get a few wickets but just a shame the match got abandoned. I’m just making sure that I own my length.

West Indies’ Aaliyah Alleyne displayed outstanding form as she scored an unbeaten 28 runs off 41 balls, including four boundaries. She provided stability to the innings and managed to keep the scoreboard ticking even when wickets were falling at the other end.

Just as the West Indies seemed set to push for a competitive total, rain interrupted the game once again, forcing the players off the field. The Australian players joined the ground staff in quickly covering the field due to heavy rain. Unfortunately, the conditions didn’t improve, and the game had to be abandoned.

Both teams will return to the Junction Oval for the final ODI on Saturday, with Australia leading the series 1-0. Hayley, the West Indies skipper, acknowledged the need for improvement, saying, It was good to be back…but I would’ve liked to have scored some more runs. Seeing how the game was going, we have a lot of areas to improve. As batters, we just have to…really look to put on a better performance.

Brief Scores:
West Indies 107-8 (Aaliyah Alleyne 28 not out; Annabel Sutherland 3-6, Alana King 3-16) against Australia – Match abandoned due to rain

Despite the unfortunate abandonment due to rain, both teams will be eager to showcase their skills in the final ODI and strive for a competitive finish to the series.
