DHAKA: In a groundbreaking move that challenges gender norms, the Bangladesh Fire Service has welcomed its first-ever female firefighters. These 15 brave women were selected out of nearly 3,000 applicants and have broken through barriers to enter traditionally male-dominated workplaces.

With their selection, the women firefighters have shattered the taboo surrounding female employment in the fire service. They underwent rigorous physical screening and exams before being admitted into the training program. Currently, they are undergoing the same intensive seven-month exercise regime as their male counterparts at an FSCD center in Mirpur.

Mohammad Wahidul Islam, director of the FSCD Directorate, emphasized that there will be no concessions or compromises in the training the women receive. From learning fire extinguishing techniques to developing physical and mental fitness, they will be prepared to handle any situation that comes their way.

While the admission of more women into Bangladesh’s uniformed services has been observed over the past decade, the opportunity for women to pursue careers in the fire department was previously unavailable.

This year, we recruited 15 female firefighters, and there are plans to recruit more in the coming years … We believe this will strengthen the capabilities of our department, stated Islam, highlighting the significance of this milestone for the organization.

For Maimuna Akter, a 21-year-old from Jhenaidah, southwestern Bangladesh, serving her community has always been a priority. Inspired by her mother, who worked as a village health worker, Akter was determined to follow a path where she could directly help people. The fire service department seemed like the perfect platform for her to make a difference during emergency situations.

However, Akter faced discouragement from her local community due to her decision to join a traditionally male-dominated profession. Despite this, she found unwavering support from her family, especially her mother. My family was always very supportive. Today, I am here because of my mother’s support, she expressed gratefully.

Bangladesh has a concerning history of industrial accidents, often resulting in factories catching fire with workers trapped inside. Tragically, a large number of victims are women. The inclusion of female firefighters not only brings a new perspective to the department but also provides comfort to women who may feel more at ease being rescued by other women in these distressing situations.

Priyanka Halder, a 22-year-old history student from Meherpur, joined the fire service last month. She too has been actively engaged in social work from a young age, fighting against child marriage and gender inequality in her community. Halder sees her role as not limited to fire extinguishing but also as a rescuer, particularly for distressed women.

Expressing pride in her work, Halder reflected on her childhood oath, which inspired her to dedicate herself to serving the country. I feel very proud that I joined as a female firefighter, and I consider it one of the best platforms to grow my career, she added.

The inclusion of female firefighters marks a significant step forward for Bangladesh, promoting gender equality and challenging stereotypes in the workforce. As these courageous women demonstrate their capabilities and serve their nation with dedication, they are truly blazing a trail and inspiring future generations.

By establishing a group of female firefighters, the Bangladesh Fire Service is not only breaking barriers but also ensuring that the department is better equipped to serve all members of society. As they prove their skills and commitment, these trailblazing women are making history and inspiring change in their country.
