New Delhi, May 30 (PTI) – On the eve of ‘World No Tobacco Day,’ WHO Regional Director for Southeast Asia Saima Wazed expressed concern over adolescents in the region being exposed to digital marketing of tobacco products. Despite existing preventive policies, the attraction of new nicotine and tobacco products is a growing issue among youth. The WHO emphasized prioritizing a generational ban on tobacco to secure a healthier future for the region. With an alarming 11 million adolescent tobacco users in Southeast Asia, it is crucial to combat the industry’s marketing tactics to safeguard the younger generation from addiction and health risks. The theme for this year’s World No Tobacco Day underscores the importance of shielding children from tobacco industry interference. The WHO calls for enhanced enforcement of regulations, increased public awareness, and multi-stakeholder collaboration to create a tobacco-free environment for the youth in Southeast Asia.
