Vivek Sagar Prasad is a prominent figure in the world of Indian hockey who recently made headlines for his outstanding goal in India’s 5-1 win over Belgium in the FIH Pro League encounter in London. While he may not be as well-known as his cricketing counterparts, Prasad has made a name for himself as a gifted midfielder who has represented India in over 90 international matches.
At just 17 years old, Prasad made his senior debut for India in January 2018, becoming the second-youngest player to play for the team. Since then, he has played a crucial role in India’s victories in several tournaments, including the Youth Olympic Games, the Champions Trophy, the Asian Games, and the Commonwealth Games.
Prasad began his hockey journey by chance when his school hockey coach in Shivnagar Chandon offered to train interested students, and Prasad took up the sport. His passion and talent for hockey quickly became evident, and he soon caught the attention of Ashok Kumar, the son of Indian hockey legend Dhyan Chand.
Prasad received an offer to join Kumar’s MP Hockey Academy in Bhopal, where he honed his skills and developed into the talented midfielder he is today.
In 2019, Prasad was named the FIH Men’s Rising Star of the Year, and in 2021, he received the FIH Young Player of the Year award. His performance in India’s bronze medal finish at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics was instrumental in securing his award.
Prasad’s success in the hockey world is a testament to his passion, hard work, and dedication. As one of India’s rising stars in hockey, he is sure to continue making headlines and leading his country to victory on the international stage.
