Senior night was filled with anticipation and excitement for West Ottawa’s Gabby Reynolds, Chelsea Overbeek, and Brooke Pedersen. As longtime teammates with nearly a decade of playing together, these three seniors showcased their immense talent and proved to be key factors in West Ottawa’s impressive 54-45 upset over No. 6-ranked Grand Haven.
The Panthers’ win marks their third consecutive victory against a top 10 team in Division 1 basketball in the state, enhancing their already impressive 12-4 overall record and 7-3 standing in the highly competitive OK Red conference. This triumph not only solidified another winning season for West Ottawa but also showcased the remarkable legacy left by this standout senior trio.
Gabby Reynolds, the team’s star player, delivered a jaw-dropping performance, tallying an impressive 34 points throughout the game. Reynolds, who has already signed with George Washington, exemplified both her talent and humility on the court. Her exceptional play in the first half set the pace for the Panthers, and her selfless approach encouraged her teammates to step up their game.
Chelsea Overbeek, the heart of the team, scored 11 points and made crucial late free throws, sealing the victory for West Ottawa. After an exceptional first quarter where Reynolds single-handedly scored all 14 of West Ottawa’s points, the team found themselves trailing by just one point. However, an outstanding defensive effort in the second quarter allowed the Panthers to turn the tide, limiting Grand Haven to just a single free throw in the first five minutes. Their impressive defensive display combined with Overbeek’s offensive contributions propelled West Ottawa to a 32-22 halftime lead.
Despite Grand Haven’s valiant efforts, narrowing the gap to 44-42 late in the game, Reynolds continued to shine with crucial baskets before ultimately fouling out with 1:21 remaining. Overbeek’s clutch free throws, coupled with Taylor Catton’s decisive basket and Magaly Lemus’ impressive rebounding, sealed the victory for the Panthers.
