West Indies Recall Shimron Hetmyer for Crucial ODI Series Against India

In a significant move, the West Indies cricket team has announced the recall of batsman Shimron Hetmyer for the upcoming One Day International (ODI) series against India. Hetmyer, who has not played for the Windies in nearly a year, has been given the opportunity based on his impressive performance with the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

With 299 runs from 13 innings for the Rajasthan Royals, Hetmyer showcased his batting prowess and caught the attention of the selectors. The left-hander’s last appearance for the West Indies was in a T20I against New Zealand in August last year. However, he was subsequently left out of the T20 World Cup squad after missing a flight.

It has been two years since Hetmyer last played an ODI for the national team, with his previous appearance in a 50-over match against Australia in July 2021. The selectors have also recalled pacer Oshane Thomas, along with injury returnees Jayden Seales, Yannic Cariah, and Gudakesh Motie.

Chief selector and West Indies legend Desmond Haynes expressed confidence in the returnees, stating, We welcome Oshane and Shimron back into the group. Both have played at the international level before, with some success, and we believe they will fit well into the set-up.

Haynes highlighted Oshane’s ability to take wickets with the new ball while describing Hetmyer as a potential ‘finisher’ in the middle stage of the innings. Their inclusion adds depth and experience to the West Indies squad.

However, seasoned players Nicholas Pooran and Jason Holder will be unavailable for the series. Wicket-keeper batter Shai Hope will lead the side for the three matches against India.

The first ODI between West Indies and India is set to take place on Thursday in Barbados. This series holds significant importance for India as they prepare for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup later this year.

It is worth noting that the West Indies failed to qualify for the 50-over extravaganza for the first time in their history.

The West Indies squad for the ODI series against India includes Shai Hope as captain, with Rovman Powell as vice-captain. Other players in the squad are Alick Athanaze, Yannic Cariah, Keacy Carty, Dominic Drakes, Shimron Hetmyer, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Kyle Mayers, Gudakesh Motie, Jayden Seales, Romario Shepherd, Kevin Sinclair, and Oshane Thomas.

Cricket fans are eagerly awaiting this thrilling contest between two formidable sides, as both teams aim to make their mark on the international stage.
