West Indies, two-time champions of the ICC Cricket World Cup, could miss out on this year’s tournament as they find themselves in a precarious position in the World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe. With eight teams already secured for the ten-team World Cup, the remaining two spots will be determined from the ongoing qualifiers.
Unfortunately, West Indies has lost two games, including a crucial one against the Netherlands on Monday. Although the Windies scored a magnificent 374 for 6 in their 50 overs, a tie ensued as the Netherlands scored 374 for 9 in their quota of overs. The match went to the super over, and despite a valiant effort, the Windies lost to the impressive Netherlands squad.
West Indies will participate in the Super Sixes, but only two teams from the six squads will advance to the final and qualify for the ODI World Cup later this year. Sadly, West Indies’ standing means they may miss out on the coveted spot. Even if they win their remaining three super sixes matches, it may not warrant a World Cup berth for Nicholas Pooran and the team.
The Super Sixes will see a combined team where group stage points against the qualified teams will contribute to the final ranking. Since West Indies lost two matches in the group stage, their position within the Super Sixes is unfavorable. The team lost to Zimbabwe and Netherlands, both of which have qualified for the Super Sixes with them from their group.
The Caribbean flavor is one that fans worldwide cherish, and it is possible we will miss out on their presence in India during the monumental event later this year. With their World Cup dreams hanging in the balance, West Indies has a fight on their hands to make it to the big dance this year.
