West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee joined a candlelight march in Kolkata on June 1, riding pillion on a motorcycle in support of wrestlers protesting in Delhi against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Brijbhushan Sharan Singh over sexual harassment allegations. Banerjee, surrounded by a large number of supporters, wore a helmet and rode on the vehicle driven by another person. The candlelight march was held demanding ‘justice’ for wrestlers. Banerjee led a similar rally on May 31 in support of the protesting wrestlers, which will continue on June 2 as well. Olympic medallist wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik along with Vinesh Phogat reached Uttarakhand’s Haridwar to immerse their medals, including Olympic ones, in the Ganges in protest. The wrestlers were detained by Delhi Police on May 30, while attempting to march to the new Parliament building to stage a demonstration. FIR has been filed against them under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 147, 149, 186, 188, 332, 353, Section 3 of the PDPP Act.
