West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has demanded an investigation into the recent train accident in Balasore, Odisha and punishment for those responsible. The accident, which involved the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Coromandel Express, and a goods train on three separate tracks, resulted in the deaths of at least 275 people and injuries to over 1100 others. Banerjee has criticized the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for not investigating the accident and accused them of suppressing the facts. She has urged the central government to take necessary actions to bring culprits to justice.
During a visit to Odisha, Banerjee also provided financial aid to the families of the deceased. She announced that the West Bengal government will provide Rs 5 lakh to kin of those who died and Rs one lakh for the injured from the state. She also assured that the West Bengal and Odisha governments are working together and providing free treatment to the injured.
However, Banerjee lamented that 31 passengers from West Bengal, who were on board the Coromandel Express, are still missing. She called for a probe into the incident, stating that the truth must come out. Banerjee also visited the SCB Medical College and Hospital, where she interacted with the patients and visited the eye and surgery department.
The triple train accident has had a profound impact on India, and the demand for justice from those affected is understandable. It remains to be seen what measures the central government will take to address this issue and to bring the culprits to justice.
